Welcome to my Homemade Handbook! My name is Jen Szohr. I am a very proud wife, mommy, and teacher. I love that you stopped by and I hope I can inspire you while you’re here! I love to share exciting new recipes and inspirational posts about life’s greatest joys and darkest struggles. Because we all need a little inspiration every day!
My life’s greatest joys are my daughter & husband {who inspire me daily}, writing, coffee, Jesus & everything Homemade.
Here at the Homemade Handbook you’ll find amazing and affordable recipes that only take 20 minutes or less to make!! As a working or stay at home parent I know your time is precious!
Being on a tight budget doesn’t mean you have to eat canned food or food from a bag! So all the food I cook with is “real food”!! I started this blog to prove that point! I constantly hear that you can’t eat healthy on a budget but you can! With a little prep and meal planning you can lead a healthy life style on a budget!
I love to write, I love to cook, I love to bake, and I love to explore farmers markets for great deals on real and organic food! I love to support my local farms and often their prices are better than my local grocery store! We are lucky enough to live in Southern California so we have many wonderful local farmers markets to pick from!
Giving birth to our daughter in August of 2014 is what truly sparked my desire to begin this blog. I started to notice the amount of added chemicals my food contained when I started to breastfeed. As a new mother I was constantly concerned despite my granny saying “oh we ate all the wrong things, drank, smoked, our kids are fine”
Well that may be true but that’s not how I’m going to do it 🙂
We typically don’t eat “low fat” or “fat free” in our house. You know why? That typically means “no fat but we added something fake to make it still taste like mayo but it’s really made in a lab and causes all kinds or crazy symptoms. Good luck!”
Ewwww
I always chose calories over chemicals and we always chose local over big grocery stores. As my daughter has grown older we’ve noticed all the hazardous chemicals we keep i our house. Hiding in the form of soap, laundry detergent, all purpose cleaner, window cleaner, etc. So we’ve stopped spending our money on store purchased chemicals. Instead, we chose essential oils and natural plant based cleaners that still clean, disinfect, and leave your house smelling fabulous!
I hope you find something great while you are here and I hope we can make meal time and house hold cleaning a little less stressful for you and your family. Knowing you’re giving your kids the best start to life is one of the greatest feelings you have as a parent.
